Michelle Obama says effort needed to help youth

Published: Wednesday, April 10, 2013 3:00 p.m. CST

CHICAGO (AP) — First lady Michelle is in her hometown of Chicago addressing youth violence.

Obama spoke Wednesday afternoon at a downtown hotel after she was introduced by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Obama said her personal story wouldn't be possible without the city of Chicago. She says some children and teens in Chicago are "consumed with watching their backs" instead of having access to basketball programs or computer labs.

The first lady told the crowd that resources and opportunity matter for children. Obama said she supports a fund that Emanuel launched last month that aims to raise $50 million in private money to pay for programs to help at-risk youth.

She says helping young people will take a "serious and sustained" investment.
