Emery, Hawks
blank Wild

Ray Emery made 20 saves, and Marian Hossa scored the lone goal as the Chicago Blackhawks won 1-0 over the Minnesota Wild in Minneapolis.

Hossa potted the winner with 4:46 left in the second period. Niklas Backstrom turned aside the other 31 shots he faced for the Wild.


UConn routs
Louisville for title

Freshman Breanna Stewart scored 23 points and Connecticut won its eighth national championship with a record 93-60 rout of Louisville in New Orleans.

Geno Auriemma is now tied with Pat Summitt for the most women’s titles all-time.


Kansas’ McLemore will enter NBA Draft

Kansas University guard Ben McLemore announced he will enter the NBA Draft.

McLemore set the school’s record for scoring as a freshman with 15.9 points per game.


White Sox pitching coach hospitalized

Don Cooper, who has been the White Sox pitching coach since 2002, was hospitalized on Tuesday. Cooper, 57, was diagnosed with diverticulitis.

Bears add two defensive linemen

The Chicago Bears signed defensive end Kyle Moore and tackle Andrew Fluellen on Tuesday. 

Moore, a fourth-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2009, had three sacks for the Bills last season. Fluellen, 28, spent time with the Lions and Dolphins last season. He has 2 1/2 sacks in 56 career games.

Ex-Bear McMichael loses election

Romeoville Mayor John Noak declared victory over former Chicago Bear Steve “Mongo” McMichael, claiming 61 percent to 39 percent of the votes in unofficial results, with all precincts reporting.

Seahawks sign Quinn as backup QB

The Seattle Seahawks brought in Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart and Tyler Thigpen for tryouts Monday, and signed Quinn as a backup to Russell Wilson. 

Quinn threw two touchdowns and eight interceptions as the Chiefs’ starter last season.

Akers set to
replace Hanson

David Akers, who was released from the 49ers last month after a shaky season in which he made just 29 of 44 field-goal attempts, signed with the Detroit Lions.

He replaces Jason Hanson, who announced his retirement last week after 21 seasons in Detroit.
