ROCK FALLS – A 44-year-old Rock Falls man shot and killed himself Sunday morning in front of officers after calling 911 to say goodbye, police said in a news release Monday.

The man called 911 about 6:40 a.m., said he wanted to say goodbye and hung up. Officers responded to the area of the 200 block of West 21st Street, where the call originated, and found the man with a handgun pointed at his chest behind First Farm Credit Services, 207 W. 21st St., the release said.

The officers tried to get him to put the gun down, but after about 10 minutes of discussion, he shot himself. His name is not being released, police said.
