ROCK FALLS – A man being chased on foot by Whiteside County sheriff’s deputies jumped into the Rock River around 10 p.m. Friday and did not resurface where deputies could see him.

A search of the river that night turned up nothing, and the situation had not changed as of Sunday, the sheriff’s department said.

According to a news release Saturday:

Deputies were responding to a complaint about an unknown man banging on the front door of a rural Rock Falls residence.

When they arrived, the man took off. After a short chase, he jumped into the river.

Deputies don’t know if he was able to get back onto the bank. More deputies were called, and a search with the Rock Falls Fire Department’s rescue boat was conducted, to no avail, the release said.

The man was white, and wore all black clothes and a black stocking-type hat.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 815-772-4044.
