Fishermen launch their boats onto the Rock River this past week. With the weather warming up, local fishing tournaments will begin over the next few weeks. (Submitted photo)

Hello ... it’s just me again. I hope you’re all having a great weekend so far. If not, I hope it gets better quick, fast, and in a hurry.

This week I wanted to update you all on some upcoming tournaments. Ahhh yes, tournaments. Tournaments mean fishing season has officially arrived. Now, while they aren’t my favorite part of the fishing season, I do enjoy them all the same.

As I mentioned before, this tourney season is going to get off with a bang. The Monsters of the Rock manufactured-bait-only tourney is first up. I love this format for tournament fishing. Lots of people out chasing fish, basically on a level playing field. This tournament will be launching out of my hometown of Prophetstown the morning of May 11th.  It will run from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m., and will sport a 10-fish limit ... and yes, you must weigh them in alive.

We have some great sponsors for this tourney. Kicking in a guaranteed  500 smackers for first place will be Dave Geary, owner of G and S Cheese Bait in Milledgeville. G and S Cheese Bait has been in business for more than 40 years now, and the Geary family has given a lot to the sport of catfishing.

The fine people at J and N Dip Worms, also of Milledgeville, will be kicking in 250 bucks for second place. The Matthews family dip worms are a favorite of lots of local fisherman, as well as many others across the Midwest.

Now, third and fourth place will also each be assured a hundred dollars apiece, thanks to Larry and Andrea at Niccoli’s Restaurant in Prophetstown, as well as Nick and Cal, owners of S and B Construction in Erie. Thanks to all of you great sponsors.

Friday night, we will have the registration meeting at Niccoli’s Restaurant on Rt. 78 in Prophetstown. At least one member from each team should show up and take care of their entry at this time. Hey, the food is great, and I highly advise you get one of their old fashioned homemade milkshakes while you’re there.

Then, on May 18th, the Erie fire department has their annual tournament, launching out of Glenn Miller Marina in Erie. This is always one of the biggest tournaments of the year, and it supports a great cause. The tourney will launch at 6 a.m., with weigh-in at noon. The entry fee is just 50 bucks, so get out and support a great group of firefighters.

Last but not least, back comes the gang from Cabela’s for yet another super tourney in beautiful Dixon. This tourney is just an awesome annual event, and if you haven’t fished it or taken in a weigh-in, then you’re missing out. Thanks to the great people at Dixon Tourism, Ace Hardware, and all the others in Dixon who have attended and/or sponsored this event. The tournament this year will be held June 8th, and I assume we will break another attendance record ... after all, Dixon is the catfish capital of Illinois.

So there you have it, three tournaments in the upcoming weeks. Get involved; it’s all about fun, after all, isn’t it?

Go Catfish!
