Authorities ID driver who died in crash with bus

WADSWORTH (AP) — Authorities have identified the person who died in a crash involving a school bus as a 62-year-old Beach Park man.

Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo says Philip Smith was pronounced dead around 9:15 a.m.

Smith was southbound in a Jeep Wrangler around 8 a.m. Friday when he was struck by the bus, which was westbound with 34 children aboard. All of the children survived.

Authorities at first were told the bus driver might have run a red light, but say they now have conflicting witness statements and don't know who was at fault.

The driver was still at the hospital Friday afternoon, and toxicological screenings were being performed.

The accident happened in Wadsworth, 45 miles north of Chicago. The crash was a mile from Newport Elementary School.
