Memories of tasty café food and rich coffee

I remember Susan’s Cafe in Sterling in the 1960s. My future husband, Frank C., and I would go there on our lunch breaks from Frantz Manufacturing, where he would buy my lunch, a hot beef sandwich with a big scoop of mashed potatoes in the center with delicious gravy poured all over it.

Now, I’m not a meat eater in general, but I ate every bit of those lean hot beef sandwiches smothered in gravy. How I stayed so tiny eating like that, I’ll never know.

The cost was less than a dollar a plate. The coffee was 10 cents a mug with free refills. It was the best dark, rich coffee. And I like my coffee black and rich, full flavored. They had the best.

Lately, I went to The Spot at the mall, and their coffee took me back to the ’60s – that same rich flavor. It was delicious and without bitterness. Culver’s also has that rich, full flavor with no bitterness. Their rich coffee is as satisfying as a dark chocolate candy bar, and I do love dark chocolate.

It’s nice to know there are restaurants today that serve that same delicious coffee I enjoyed in the ’60s with no bitterness and still a strong rich, full flavor.
