Vote no on county sales tax increase

Published: Friday, April 5, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

Currently Whiteside County is experiencing record unemployment in addition to net population outflow. I believe it’s illogical at this time for an addition of any form or type of tax increase as we attempt to facilitate the economic recovery in this geographical area.

I understand that the schools are currently experiencing financial shortfall. I also understand that probably every village, township, municipality, or any governmentally funded organization in the county, including the county, is also undergoing some type of financial hardship.

However, with 11 percent of the population lacking employment, plus the underemployed, plus the complete loss of a percentage of residents, how can we now consider raising taxes?

I would think it far more conducive for the revitalization of this area to continue to practice fiscal austerity than just raise taxes.

I feel the vote should be a no vote on the question of any tax increase for any reason at this time.
