Verna Lee Broers

WALNUT – Verna Lee Broers, 91, of Walnut, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at her home.

Verna Lee was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Van Orin, the daughter of Bert and Ethel (King) Ward. She was united in marriage to Verden Broers on May 7, 1944, in Van Orin. He preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 2002.

She was an elementary school teacher and taught at the Meeks one-room schoolhouse, Tampico Grade School, Walnut Grade School, and Deer Grove Grade School. Verna Lee was a member of First Christian Church of Walnut and Deer Grove Town and Country Club. She loved to go ballroom dancing with Verden, and loved cooking and teaching. Verna Lee loved her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters, Deanna (Dan) Hoge of Cambridge, Sharon (Tracey Krebsbach) of Peru, and Janet (Randy) Walters of Tampico; one son, Douglas (Linda) Broers of Tampico; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donal Ward of Walnut; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Garland Funeral Home in Walnut. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brian Moore, pastor of First Christian Church of Walnut, officiating. Burial will be at Walnut Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to First Christian Church of Walnut, St. Jude Children’s Research Center, and Walnut Manor Nursing Home.
