Township government: Leave it alone

Published: Thursday, April 4, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

Being from California, and only recently coming to Illinois, I was unfamiliar with townships.

However, I was familiar with 99 percent of all counties in California being run by professionals, with solid experience, and in many cases advanced education – people called county and city administrators.

Having been in construction management all my life and working specifically with county and city administrators, I can say from experience they are well worth the money.

Unfortunately, as the editorial board of this paper has editorialized on several occasions, Lee County is not fiscally responsible. Some counties may be, but the Lee County Board has shown repeatedly that it simply can’t manage and control costs and can’t make effective personnel decisions.

With that said, without our townships, many of us would be held hostage by a similar lack of professionalism brought on by boards that have no real administrative experience.

I live in Dixon Township, and I am amazed at the service that Mr. Farster and his team provide. To turn those responsibilities over to Lee County is simply ludicrous!

If the Lee County Board hires a professional county administrator, that may change things. Of course, that’s “if” they hire a professional manager and let that person do the job.

However, we all know that none of the current Lee County Board would go for bringing in professional help. After all, the Lee County Board chairman himself seems to think a long-range fiscal plan is a waste of money, so why would a guy that bright want competition?

Until county boards all bring in experienced, knowledgeable professionals, trained to effectively manage in a manner that provides a higher level of fiscal responsibility, controls employee nepotism, and reels in the amazing pay and benefits county workers have, leave the townships alone.
