Candidate seeks seat on school board

Published: Friday, April 5, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

Hello, I am Cuauhtemoc Reyes. I am the son of Michael and Mary Reyes and brother of Michael and Delora. I ask for your vote in my run for the position of Sterling School Board. I am a lifelong resident of Sterling and a 1992 graduate.

There are many challenges facing the education of our children, and the role of the school board is to create a vision and develop policies to guide the superintendent in our common goal of the education of our children. I believe that I am highly qualified to help create the vision and policies required because of my educational background and job experience.

As part of my qualifications, my doctoral training has given me an insight to educational theory and fiscal stewardship that I can use as a school board member.

Another area that qualifies me for the school board is my teaching experience in the elementary, middle, high schools, and at Sauk Valley Community College. Currently, I am an assistant principal at Rockford East High, which is currently recognized as an Illinois Honor Roll school.

I agree with the Sterling Public Schools’ mission and vision statements. Sterling Schools believes we can ensure student achievement by creating optimal learning environments, which in turn will lead our students to achieving in life by being college and career ready.

In light of the many recent financial and educational challenges presented by the state and federal agencies, Sterling Schools continues to lead through our participation in Race to the Top Three. Our task as a school board is to see that all children have the opportunity to achieve their goals.

Once again, I am Cuauhtemoc Reyes, and I ask for your vote on April 9 in the Sterling School Board election. Thank you for your support.
