STERLING – Gene E. Hammelman, 79, of Sterling, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Toulon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Gene was born Feb. 27, 1934, in Coleta, the son of Chris and Clara (Lauts) Hammelman. He married Peggy Horner in 1954. He later married Norma F. Tucker-Dissinger on Nov. 15, 1987, in Sterling. He was employed as a machine operator by Sterling Steel Ball for more than 30 years. Gene was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sterling and the Rock River Pigeon Club. He loved to do woodworking and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of Sterling; one daughter, Rhonda (Roger) Tepen of Rock Falls; two sons, Randy Hammelman of Sterling and John (Paula) Hammelman of Alaska; two stepdaughters, Sue (Larry) Bellini of Rock Falls and Wendy (Garry) Scott of Lyndon; one stepson, James (Judy) Dissinger of Morrison; one brother, Lyle Hammelman of Rock Falls; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Null, Ruth Jacobsen and Letha Dietz.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Paul Judd officiating. Burial will be at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.

A memorial has been established to Toulon Rehabilitation and Health Care Center or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
