Astros win in AL debut, season opener

Rick Ankiel and the Houston Astros made an impressive debut in the American League, trouncing the Texas Rangers 8-2 Sunday in the major league opener in Houston.

Ankiel launched a pinch-hit three-run shot for the first homer this season. Bud Norris pitched well for the win, and Erik Bedard threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings for his first career save and gave Bo Porter a win in his first game as manager.

Cubs’ Barney out
for opening day

Chicago second
baseman Darwin Barney suffered a deep cut in his left knee chasing a foul ball during the Cubs’ last spring training game, a 6-3 loss to the Astros on
Saturday in Houston.

Barney overran a foul pop and wound up banging into the boundary wall beyond first base. He required five stitches and could be headed for the disabled list.

Manager Dale Sveum said Barney is definitely out for today’s season opener in Pittsburgh, with Brent Lillibridge likely replacing him.

Griner, Baylor
stunned by Louisville

Louisville pulled off a big upset in the NCAA Tournament, beating top-seeded Baylor 82-81 on Sunday in Oklahoma City.

Baylor (34-2) had won 32 straight games, but 6-foot-8 post Brittney Griner didn’t make a basket until the second half, then committed a foul with 2.6 seconds left that gave
Louisville a chance to win.

Monqiue Reid made both free throws, rescuing the Cardinals (27-8) after they squandered a 17-point lead in the last 7½ minutes.

Griner had 14 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in her last
college game.
