Local roundup: Clippers find a takers, lose season opener to Maple Leafs in Geneseo

The Amboy Clippers' search for a season opener brought them to Geneseo, where the Clippers lost 15-9 to the Maple Leafs on Friday.

Reece Howell had a single and a double and drove in four runs for Amboy (0-1). Taylor Ikens took the loss, but all seven runs he gave up in the third inning were unearned. He struck out two and walked five in 2 2/3 innings.

Spencer Johnson hit a solo home run for Amboy, which tied the game 5-5 with four runs in the top of the third. The Maple Leafs improved to 2-0.

Granite City 5, Rock Falls 0: Eddie Nelson got one hit of support and took the loss in the Rockets' season opener on the road.

Granite City improved to 3-3. Nelson allowed five earned runs on four hits and struck out five in 2 2/3 innings. Steven Armoska allowed just one hit and struck out two in 3 1/3 innings of relief work.


Rockets sweep: Michaela Ward tossed a 3-hitter to lead Rock Falls to a 7-1 victory at Mascoutah in the first game of a road doubleheader. The Rockets completed a sweep with a 15-5, six-inning decision in the nightcap.

Ward struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in going the distance in the opener. Jordan Giddings drove in a pair of runs.

In the second game, Kaylyn Booker drove in three runs, while Giddings, Ward, Linsey Brown and Morgan Mammosser knocked in two apiece. Giddings hit a home run.

Julie Dodd was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs, four hits and two walks in four innings. She also struck out three.
