Warden: Media tour went well

Pontiac warden: No extra security for media tour

PONTIAC (AP) – The warden at the maximum-security Pontiac Correctional Center says he will tell his boss that Friday’s news media tour went well.

Randy Pfister says he and his staff are proud of the prison and “we have no problem showing our facility off and opening it up.”

Gov. Pat Quinn said last summer that media tours were off limits. Department of Corrections officials said they would cost money in overtime for extra staff and disrupt operations.

They relented after media complaints.

Pfister says there were no extra staff on Friday and nothing out of the ordinary.

He says none of the dozen or so reporters tried to sandbag him with questions. He says he could see that “misconceptions” about a disorderly, too-crowded prison were cleared up.
