‘Plan for future, embrace the past’

When I was elected 1st Ward alderwoman 6 years ago, I brought with me a total dedication to the city of Amboy. Since then, I have made it my goal to promote business, tourism, municipal planning, fiscal responsibility, and efficiency within the city of Amboy, all while looking out for the citizens’ best interest.

Amboy deserves a mayor who has a vision for the future and who allows us to compete, grow, and be financially responsible. I believe that I am that person.

As an alderwoman, I have constantly held the council accountable for its financial decisions. I have opposed our current mayor, and a few aldermen, when they suggest that we raise taxes on utilities, including gas, electric and water/sewer rates. I have argued against the city of Amboy imposing a sales tax increase to raise revenue.

Sometimes tax increases are necessary, but when the city of Amboy has not done what it needs to do in order to cut expenses and become financially responsible, my vote will remain a “no.”

Promoting business in Amboy needs to be a priority for the next mayor. As a business owner and former chamber of commerce president, I strongly believe our local businesses are the foundation on which we can build a stronger community. Our businesses support the city and schools with tax revenues, and support our community by sponsoring our schools and sports programs.

Encouraging new businesses, while supporting existing businesses, is essential for the future of Amboy. The mayor of Amboy should live by that philosophy. I most definitely do.

If elected, a key goal of mine will be to open up the lines of communication between the city of Amboy, the citizens, schools and our many community organizations. The citizens of Amboy are our greatest resource. There are countless people who volunteer in order to help make Amboy a better place to live. Those people need to be valued, respected, and have their concerns heard. I will be a mayor that does all three.

I believe Amboy has a very bright future. Amboy needs a mayor who can plan for the future while embracing the past. As an alderwoman, I wrote the Amboy Preservation Ordinance. With the passing of this ordinance, the city council made it possible for our community to begin preserving our historical treasures.

Unfortunately, our current mayor has been unwilling to move forward with this opportunity to enhance our community, costing us precious time and potential grant money. As mayor, I will ensure our city’s rich history is protected.

I would like to thank the citizens of Amboy for the support they have given me as alderwoman, and hope I can count on them to support me as mayor of Amboy.
