I WANT YOU...to win a spot in the SVM fantasy league

Published: Friday, March 29, 2013 10:21 p.m. CDT

Had a bad draft? Wondering, even before the first pitch is thrown, whether or not you can manage your ill-assembled band of misfits into contention?

Well, as many Cubs fans are also already lamenting, there's always next year. And I've been meaning to talk to you about next year.

My buddy, Dave "Klingbuckets" Klingbeil, is in a 30-team dynasty league, and I have no problem admitting I'm crazy jealous. Yes, my 16-team mixed league and 10-team NL-only keeper league provide unique levels of competition. But I want to scratch the bottom of the barrel. I want to consider Dylan Axelrod viable to my fantasy rotation.

This might come as a shock to a couple of you, but we newspaper-pushers don't have a room full of lavish prizes to offer you, should you take part in a contest. Here's what I have to offer: a spot in the 2014 SVM Dynasty League.

Assuming you just fell out of your chair and pulled yourself back up by your bootstraps, here's how you play/hopefully win. Spoiler alert: If you play every week and never manage to win, you should never, ever buy a lottery ticket.

Next week, we'll be unveiling the linchpin of our MLB Extra page, The Hot Corner. It will feature a hot-button question that you can chime in on. If suitable for print, your banter will appear the following week. Also in the Hot Corner will be a Market Survey, in which I'll identify a buy-low and a sell-high player.

As for our little contest, it's called Pitch the Commish. Each week, I'll pick a player, then list four more of comparable fantasy value going into the week. You tell me which of the four players you like to outperform mine that week. If you're right, you'll receive an invitation to the league. You can tweet me (@CHeimerman_SVM), email me (cheimerman@saukvalley.com), carrier pigeon me, send a singing telegram, whatever is easiest.

Imagine Jeff Samardzija's name worked into a singing telegram. That could be fun.

There will be a lot of logistic things to figure out for the league, but I've already figured out how we'll determine the draft order. Every time you pick a player who ranks higher on the player rater than mine, you'll get a point. He with the most points at the regular season's conclusion will be awarded the top pick. Second-most points, second pick. And so on.

There will be no entry fee, jelly beans or otherwise. Competition will be for pride and a chance to see your name (at least your team's name) in the paper on a weekly basis. I plan to publish the league's standings and some highlights each week.

Please read between the lines of this dynasty league, and consider it a metaphor for how I feel about my job and the Sauk Valley. Stop me if you've heard me bring this up many times, but my wife and I have twins on the way. We put an offer on a house.

I love this job and the work we do here. And I'm one of the few people who aren't willing to give up the old-school satisfaction of getting your fingers dirty while you get your news.

Yes, we'll be putting more and more of an emphasis on the online product and, who knows, maybe someday we'll even have one of those apps all the kids are talking about. That's a big "Nudge, nudge" to the higher-ups in our IT department.

Back to the task at hand, check out The Hot Corner next week. I hope you have as much fun participating with this weekly feature as I do writing this column.
