Free geocaching program Saturday

THOMSON – A free 3-hour geocaching program will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center, 7071 Riverview Road.

Geocaching is a treasure hunt using a hand-held global positioning system receiver to find a treasure, or cache. Typical caches are small, waterproof containers holding a logbook, and toys or trinkets of little monetary value.

The program is geared toward beginners, but all experience levels are welcome. GPS receivers will be available to borrow, or participants can bring their own. People with their own GPS receiver are asked to bring a cable to connect to a computer and download the geocache locations.

A meet-and-greet will be from 11 a.m. to noon, with sloppy joes provided by Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge. An introduction to geocaching will be from noon to 1 p.m., with the search from 1 to 2 p.m.

Geocachers can input event code GC44V4J at www.geocaching.com for more information. Volunteers are sought to help with the program, and can sign up at www.geocaching.com or by calling the refuge.

Call the office at 815-273-2732, ext. 116, to register or for more information.
