Peoria man who alleges jail abuse gets $95,000

PEKIN (AP) — A Peoria man who says he was mistreated at the Tazewell County Jail will receive $95,000 under an out-of-court settlement.

The Pekin Daily Times reports (http://bit.ly/ZBp7IS ) the county board approved the payout Wednesday to settle a lawsuit filed by Everett Lewis.

The 47-year-old Lewis alleges he was abused by corrections officers and denied medical treatment while he was an inmate in 2009.

His attorney, Rodney Nordstrum, says the officers dealing with the disruptive inmate knew he was bipolar.

Tazewell County Sheriff Robert Huston says the case had no merit but that the settlement cost the county less than the legal fees to go to trial.

County Board member John Ackerman voted against the settlement, saying it set a bad precedent to acknowledge wrongdoing while contending no policies were violated.
