Fatal on I-88: Coroner IDs Oregon woman killed in collision with semi

GENEVA – The Kane County Coroner's Office has identified an SUV driver killed in a collision with a semi tractor trailer earlier this week as Amy L. Luepkes, 46, of Oregon.

The crash shut down westbound Interstate 88 near Aurora for almost 6 hours Tuesday night, authorities said.

The driver of the eastbound semi, Patrick Garrison of Clinton, Iowa, lost control near state Route 56, crossed a grass median and hit Luepkes' westbound SUV around 7:15 p.m., State Police Master Sgt. Greg Minx said.

Both vehicles burst into flames, he said. The truck ended up in the grass on the other side of the westbound lanes, and investigators closed the westbound lanes until about 1 a.m.

The coroner pronounced Luepkes, who was alone in the SUV, dead at the scene. No one else was injured, Minx said.

No citations had been issued as of Thursday afternoon; Garrison told investigators his truck malfunctioned, and the investigation could take several weeks, an ISP spokeswoman said.

Luepkes, a 1984 Oregon High School graduate, is survived by, among others, her sons, David and Austin Luepkes, her mother, Judith Aurand, and her fiance, Jeff Sartorious, all of Oregon.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Homes Inc. in Oregon. Her obituary is available at farrellhollandgale.com online.
