Kayla Bowlin, 18, of Polo, practices dance at Center Stage Dance Studio in Dixon. Kalya plans to move to Los Angeles and become a professional backup dancer. In the meantime, you can watch her dance at the April 20 recital at Centennial Auditorium in Sterling.

POLO – If she had her druthers, she’d be dancing with the stars.

Eighteen-year-old Kayla Bowlin dreams of being a permanent backup dancer, and her artist of choice is singing heartthrob Justin Timberlake.

“I am really in love with Justin Timberlake,” she said. “That would be a great person to be a backup dancer for.”

Kayla, who has been dancing since she was 4, now dances with Centerstage Dance Studio in Dixon and S&R Dance Studio in Freeport. She performs all types of dance – tap, jazz, ballet, modern, lyrical, contemporary and hip-hop.

After she graduates from Polo High School in May, she’ll attend Sauk Valley Community College to complete her general education requirements, then she plans to head to Los Angeles to pursue a professional dance career.

Why does she love dance?

“It’s easy to go to, no matter what emotions you’re feeling,” she said. “I’ve gained a passion for it that no one could ever understand. It’s really nice to do.”

Kayla will perform with her Centerstage team on April 20 at Sterling High School’s Centennial Auditorium.

Kayla’s dance instructor, Nikki Spinden-Meagher, has worked with her for 10 years.

The teen is “unbelievably talented,” Spinden-Meagher said.

“She’s a freak of nature. She’s just amazing; you kind of only get one kid like that ever in your whole teaching career.”

The young dancer, daughter of Christy and Mike Bowlin of Polo, said her proudest accomplishment so far was being named dancer of the year at the Celebration Talent competition last year in Wisconsin.

“I competed and got the crown and sash and was featured in dance magazines and in programs for this year’s competition,” she said. “They want me to assist in this year’s nationals as reigning dancer of the year.”

Kayla also has received an offer to sign with an LA talent agency. If she accepts, the agency will send her to auditions for special performances and music videos, which is just what she wants.

Watch out, J.T., Kayla Bowlin is coming soon to a dance studio near you.
