Governor: CPS closures require input from public

CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn says those affected by Chicago Public Schools' proposed closures need to provide input before a final decision is made.

The Chicago Democrat spoke Wednesday to reporters in Chicago, where a rally against the closures was planned later in the day.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to close 54 schools, saying the closings are needed because many schools are half-empty and failing.

Opponents say the plan disproportionately affects minority students and won't save money. They worry children will have to cross gang boundaries to get to new schools.

Quinn says any closures should be carried out in a prudent manner.

He didn't give a clear answer on if he supported a moratorium, saying everyone should provide input before a final decision.
