MAHOMET – Shirley E. Barnhart, 68, of Mahomet, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013, in the comfort of her home.

Shirley was born Aug. 14, 1944, in Sterling. She was a kind, hardworking, selfless woman who will be remembered by her family and loved ones as “B.” An avid reader and a great collector of books, she also enjoyed cooking homestyle foods. Most of all, though, she enjoyed being at home with her family and grandchildren.

Shirley’s career began in 1965 at the Illini Union as the information clerk. Shirley had been in her current position as textbook manager for the Illini Union Bookstore since 1987. Loving every aspect of her job, she was highly dedicated, and loved when the students returned in the spring/fall semesters and book rush began.

Surviving are her mother, Betty Hammelman, sister, Sandy (Al) Segneri, and brother, Larry Hammelman, all of Sterling; nephews, Josh (Bridgett) Hammelman of Sterling and Alex Segneri of Chicago; and niece, Emily (Nick) Jones of Rock Falls. Also surviving are her children, Drew Barnhart of Bellflower and Lindsay (Chris) Ealy of Mahomet; as well as her grandchildren, Kylie Jackson of Dupo, and George, Natalie, and Margo Ealy of Mahomet.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Hammelman.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and the funeral at 7 p.m. Thursday at Blair-Owens Funeral Home, 102 E. Dunbar St., Mahomet, with the Rev. Dave Ashby officiating. Interment will be private.
