DIXON – Ray A. Long, 72, of Dixon, died Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at his home. 

He was born Jan. 6, 1941, in Wolf Lake, the son of Earl and Ruth (Bryant) Long. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years before retiring.

Ray attended Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church in Dixon, and he was involved in leading youth to Christ at Rock River Bible Camp. He also had volunteered at the Dixon Park District.

He enjoyed tending his garden, golfing with great friends, fishing for the big cats, boating, vacationing with his family, walking his beloved pet, Molly, and anything else in the sunshine.

Ray was a veteran of the Navy, and served aboard the destroyer USS Purdy. He married Carol Freil on Oct. 10, 1965, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dixon.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, David Long of Nampa, Idaho, and Daniel Ray (Shelly) Long and Duane (Stacy) Long, both of Dixon; five grandchildren, Jessa, Nathan, and Laci Long, and Jonathon and Nicole Shaffer; one brother, Jerry (Gail) Long of Florida; one sister, Fay (Ron) Duffy of Dixon; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Long-Lieving of Dixon.

Ray was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Long.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home in Dixon. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bethel Evangelical Congregational Church in Dixon, with the Rev. James Carlson, pastor, officiating. Burial, with military graveside honors by the Dixon combined veterans group, will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon.

Memorials have been established to Rock River Bible Camp and Serenity Hospice & Home.
