DIXON – Irene Nelta Griffith Haak, 88, of Dixon, died Monday, March 25, 2013, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon, after a short illness. She worked in the classified department at the Dixon Telegraph for 22 years before retiring in 1988.
Irene was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Bradford Township, Lee County, the daughter of Bowdon F. and Nelta (Landau) Jessee. She graduated from Lee Center High School. Irene married Gordon L. Griffith on Sept. 27, 1946, in Ashton. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1971. She married Russell H. Haak on March 26, 1976, in Dixon. He preceded her in death on May 19, 1988. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dixon, and volunteered at the Dixon Food Pantry for more than 20 years.
Survivors include one son, Larry L. (Charlys) Griffith of South Beloit; one daughter, Patricia L. Frey of Dixon; four grandchildren, Kevin Griffith of Dixon, Ginger (Mike) Hulbert of Hayward, Wis., David (Roxane) Frey of Dixon, and Melissa Schoepfer of Phoenix; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and two sisters, Dorothy (Walter) Gehrt of Dixon and Laura Hinrichs of Shelbyville, Ind.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and one sister.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home in Dixon. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dixon, with the Rev. Frank Langholf, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon.
A memorial has been established to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
