Betty Jo Cross

POLO – Betty Jo Cross, 86, of Polo, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. She taught school in the Polo School District for more than 20 years before retiring.

She was a member of the United Methodist Women Group, the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and a prior choir member. Betty Jo was an active member of the Retired Teachers’ Association. She was an avid traveler, and loved watching her family in their sports activities. She was a true friend to all. 

Betty was born July 4, 1926, in Albany, the daughter of Bruce and Josephine (Parker) Slaymaker. She was united in marriage to Gavin Cross on Aug. 24, 1950, in Garden Plain. He preceded her in death in 1970.

Survivors include her daughter, Jane (Jeff) Hunn of North Manchester, Ind.; and daughter-in-law, Char Cross, and granddaughters, Jessica Cross and Sara Cross, all of Belvidere.

She also was preceded in death by her son, James Cross; and brother, Robert Slaymaker.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Polo Family Funeral Home and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Faith United Methodist Church in Polo, with the funeral at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery in Polo.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
