Tanner Morse had a big weekend, helping the Sterling Golden Warriors to a 2-1 start to their season after a trip through southern Illinois. And when the senior needed a hand, his classmate, Logan Rippy, was available.
Morse drew five walks to post an on-base percentage of .800, swiped four bases and got all but one out in the closest game of the weekend, a 5-4 victory over Quincy in Sterling’s second game of the O’Fallon Invitational.
The Golden Warriors won the first, 13-2 in five innings, over St. Francis de Sales after falling 13-0 in five innings to Andrew on Friday night at Edwardsville High School.
Morse struck out nine and allowed four unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings against Quincy. With a runner at third and two outs in the top of the seventh, Rippy struck out Braden Collins to convert the save. Trevor Delgado gave the Warriors just enough cushion with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the third that made the score 5-0.
Brandon Dennis got the win over de Sales, working three innings and also collecting an RBI triple and two runs scored.
Dixon 11, Knoxville 8: The Dukes did more with fewer – hits, that is – to even their mark at 1-1 with an 11-8 win over Knoxville on Saturday at the Galesburg Invitational.
Kelson Spinden collected two of the Dukes’ eight hits, while Knoxville had 10. Dan Pultorak and John Thomas both stole two bases for Dixon.
