Sterling’s Wolber assists in two titles

Emory University senior and Sterling High School graduate Ann Wolber helped two relay teams win titles this weekend at the NCAA Division III Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.

Wolber swam with Renee Rosenkranz, Nancy Larson and Anna Dobben on the Eagles’ 400-yard freestyle and 200 free relay teams, setting a D-III record in the former (3:21.28).

Wolber had a hand in six relay titles during her college career at Emory, and the Eagles won the team title for the fourth straight year.


Busch wins third Nationwide race

Kyle Busch won the NASCAR Nationwide Series’ Royal Purple 300 at Auto Club Speedway on Saturday.

Busch, held off Sam Hornish Jr. for his sixth win in the last eight Nationwide races at the 2-mile Fontana track. Busch has won three of the five races this season in NASCAR’s second-level series.


Cubs’ Baker to miss at least a month

The Chicago Cubs announced Scott Baker will be shut down for at least a month with a right elbow strain.

Baker was shut down after his first Cactus League outing 1 week ago.


Bears sign veterans Anderson, Zbikowski

The Chicago Bears signed veteran linebacker James Anderson to a 1-year contract 2 days after D.J. Williams was added as a replacement for Brian Urlacher.

The Bears also gave a 1-year contract to 5-year NFL veteran and Arlington Heights native Tom Zbikowski, who is expected to push Major Wright at strong safety and contribute on special teams.

Anderson, holds the Carolina record for games played by a linebacker with 94.


Pitt gives Dixon 10-year extension

The University of Pittsburgh gave men’s basketball coach Jamie Dixon a 10-year contract extension that runs through 2023.

Dixon is 127-66 in Big East play in his 10 years coaching the Panthers. Pitt begins play in the Atlantic Coast Conference next season.

UCLA’s Howland denies report of firing

Ben Howland denied a Yahoo Sports report Saturday night that he had been told he was out as UCLA’s basketball coach.

Howland said he had not yet spoken to Athletic Director Dan Guerrero.


Boucher out as Lightning coach

The Tampa Bay Lightning fired coach Guy Boucher after a 5-3 loss at Ottawa on Saturday dropped their record to 13-17-1.
