America was founded by men, not God

Published: Friday, March 29, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

I have seen several letters lately of the religious variety that have left me utterly dumbfounded. Seriously, people, a small amount of research would reveal to you that America is not a “Christian” nation, nor was it founded “by God.”

It was founded by men who knew the terrible power of religion, and that it should not be included in government, especially one made up of many kinds of people. You cannot use “biblical truths” (almost an oxymoron because of the factual and historical problems with the Bible) as an argument for how we should operate government, because not everyone thinks the Bible holds the truth.

We have people in the U.S. that go by just about every set of beliefs there is. Put down the Bible and read the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Yes, you can believe in your religion, but you cannot use it to suppress other’s rights, such as same-sex marriage.

If the U.S. was truly founded on the principles of Christianity and the Bible, then tattoos would be illegal, clothes of two different fabrics banned, and work on the Sabbath punishable by death. Genocide and slavery are also endorsed in the Bible, but I guess it’s OK, since, as Dave Fox (March 9 letter) put it, “God’s word and his principles never change.”

I’m also slightly offended by his comment about Steven Lopez (who wrote in on March 6) not understanding science, since Mr. Fox believes a talking snake forbade Eve from eating an apple, and most likely many of the other magical-like Bible stories.

I could go on about this, but I invite readers to do a bit of research and see what I’m talking about.
