Cougars dominate NUIC West team

A quartet of Eastland players were all-conference selections in the NUIC West Conference this past season.

Senior Ty Hartman and junior Dalton Shaner were unanimous picks to the first team, while senior Austin Hansen fell one vote shy of unanimous status. Junior Skylar Paulson was named to the second team.

West Carroll seniors Nick Hughes and Tommy Losch also earned spots on the squad, as honorable mention selections. A full list of the team can be found on B5.

Fay, a 2007 graduate of Putnam County High School who also played for the Preds in their inaugural season last year, rejoins the team after completing a season playing in Uruguay.

NIB-12 confirms
five-team divisions

The Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference will split into two five-team divisions after Streator departs following the 2013-14 school year, the conference announced Tuesday.

The conference currently stands at 12 schools, but Dixon and Streator have announced their departures to other conferences.

The East Division will be Kaneland, DeKalb, Sycamore, Morris and Yorkville, while current East member Rochelle will move to the West and compete alongside Sterling, Geneseo, LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa.

The conference will continue looking at candidates for expansion, according to Rochelle principal and conference president Travis McGuire.

Pecatonica will not field team in 2013

The Pecatonica Indians will not have a varsity football team for the 2013 season, the Rockford Register Star reported.

Pecatonica, which has not had a winning season since a 5-4 finish in 2009, will forfeit its varsity game, but it will have a JV team. The Indians forfeited the last three games of the 2012 season because of low numbers.

The school, which is the second-largest in the NUIC, is looking for a new coach after 12-year coach Brett Frederick resigned last fall.

Veteran Reed lands in Houston

After saying repeatedly that he wanted to remain in Baltimore, Ed Reed found more money and more interest elsewhere.

Reed, one of the Ravens’ defensive standouts for more than a decade and one of the most accomplished safeties in NFL history, has agreed to terms on a 2-year deal with the Texans.
