Social skills covered in sessions

Free local training sessions are scheduled during April for parents of students receiving special education services.

Three continuing professional development units will be available from each session.

“Improving the Social Skills of Children with Disabilities” will be from 6 to 9 p.m. April 10 at First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Fifth St., Oregon. Topics will include how social skills are part of Illinois learning standards, how their acquisition is addressed in an individualized education plan, and methods for teaching social and emotional learning. Dinner will be provided.

The second part, “Rewards or Punishment - Understanding Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports,” will be from 6 to 9 p.m. April 18 in the Auxiliary Room at Rochelle Community Hospital, 900 N Second St.

Topics to be covered are functional behavior analysis, positive behavioral interventions, behavior intervention plans in the IEP, and suspension-expulsion safeguards for students, including manifestation determinations. Dinner will be provided.

Another session on “Improving the Social Skills” will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 25 at the YWCA of the Sauk Valley, 412 First Ave., Sterling. Refreshments will be available.
