Habeas corpus discussion set for Illinois Capitol

Published: Wednesday, March 20, 2013 9:30 a.m. CDT

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Legal experts will discuss democracy's handling of unpopular groups in a legal discussion next month at the Illinois Capitol.

On April 4, two panels of authorities will examine "Personal Liberty: A Discussion of Habeas Corpus from Joseph Smith to Guantanamo."

The round-table discussion is sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission.

It will focus on two incidents separated by 160 years. First is the case in the 1840s against Joseph Smith, leader of the newly formed Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Missouri wanted to extradite Smith from Illinois to face criminal charges.

The other case is the continuing incarceration of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Admission is free but advance reservation required.
