Just-Us Place also features a banquet room

POLO – A new bar and restaurant opened Friday in the former Polo Bowl in honor of a local Marine killed in action.

Polo natives Jeannie and Kendall Kyker, 54 and 50, opened Just-Us Place, 601 N. Union Ave. in honor of their son. Staff Sgt. Justus Bartelt was 27 when he was killed in combat in Afghanistan in July 2010.

The Kykers also will allow the Polo VFW and American Legion to meet in the banquet room, which seats 40 to 45, when it’s not being rented.

Area Marines, including Justus, often passed time at the bowling alley’s bar before the Kykers bought it, so they are carrying on his legacy, Jeannie said.

“This is a way of healing. It’s our family’s way of moving forward, trying to find the positive in a horrible situation, our way of bringing a service to the community that we feel is needed,” she said.

“It’s given us our new focus to carry on his name. We could only open this and do what we’re doing because of Justus.”
