Obey all laws so everyone is protected

This is in response to a letter written by Harvey Tegeler on March 14 titled “Look out for motorcycles.” My prayers go out to the Munz family in the loss of their loved one and to the Ruf family in the loss of their freedom and peace of mind and life.

Mr. Tegeler, your thinking scares me – a lot. You have no regard for the laws of the road, which are to keep all drivers safe. It’s the law for a motor-driven cycle to have a taillight (big enough to be seen), a headlight (of which both have to be on day and night), turn signals, and rearview mirrors. We all know about the left-hand clutch – that’s why turn signals are a law.

You talk about hearing people’s squealing brakes because they “just” noticed you since you ride without the required lighting equipment on your cycle. How dare you jeopardize my freedom and peace of mind putting yourself on the road without all legal requirements of lighting and the risk of being hit? Why should I be put in a position of going to prison for hitting and killing someone who didn’t care to protect themself?

You’re right – it doesn’t matter who Mrs. Ruf works for, and her toxicology report was revealed.

Munz had improper lighting, used no turn signaling, and was under the influence of drugs – all proved. Over the years, I’ve followed Mr. Munz on his bike riding around town and can say he wasn’t a safe rider with no regard for anyone else on the road.

Mrs. Ruf, it’s sad you’ve been put in this nightmare because someone didn’t care to protect himself or others. God bless you; draw your strength from him.
