Sterling man gets 6 years in shooting

MORRISON – Octavius L. Zackery, 35, of Sterling, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for shooting a 29-year-old man in the hip during an argument on Nov. 17. 

Zackery pleaded guilty Feb. 27 to aggravated battery with a firearm. Three other charges – aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of weapons, and possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card, a misdemeanor – were dismissed.

Motorcyclist gets probation, fine

MORRISON – Michael R. Modler, 55, of Sterling, was sentenced to 4 years of probation and fined $5,000 for failure to report an accident with injuries, a felony.

Modler crashed his motorcycle on West Lincolnway at Anne Street in Galt on March 18, 2012, and left before police arrived. His girlfriend, Charlotte Henson of Sterling, was thrown from the bike and seriously injured; he left her there.

Modler pleaded guilty Feb. 27 in Whiteside County Court. Improper passing and driving an uninsured vehicle charges were dismissed.

Rock Falls woman gets public service

DIXON – Stacie R. Nailor, 42, of Rock Falls, was sentenced to 501 hours of public service and 18 months of conditional discharge Friday for accepting $200 from a Dixon Correctional Center inmate on May 12, 2011, in exchange for a pound of tobacco and 1,000 rolling papers.

Nailor pleaded guilty Friday in Lee County Court to attempted official misconduct, a misdemeanor. A felony bribery charge was dismissed.

Rock Falls woman receives probation

MORRISON – Penny J. Schmidt, 24, of Rock Falls, who drove her car into four mailboxes in Rock Falls a year ago today while high on Ecstasy, was sentenced to 2 years, 6 months of probation.

Schmidt pleaded guilty Feb. 14 in Whiteside County Court to possession of a controlled substance and aggravated DUI, both felonies. She got the same sentence on each count, terms to be served concurrently.

Charges of resisting a peace officer, driving with a suspended license, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident were dismissed.

August trial date set in arson case

DIXON – Trial was set for Aug. 19 for Christopher C. Owens, 21, of Dixon, charged in Lee County Court with four counts of aggravated arson and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Police say Owens set an apartment building on fire on Sept. 20 after getting into a fight with a resident.

Man sentenced in farm burglaries

OREGON – Robert J. Frieberg, 42, of Emerson, just west of Sterling, was sentenced to 6 months in jail and 4 years of probation for taking tools and equipment from several Ogle County farms in June 2012.

Frieberg pleaded guilty to burglary Feb. 28 in Ogle County Court. One charge of burglary was dismissed.

Hearing in April in sex abuse case

DIXON – Another status hearing will be held April 4 for Nikos M. Kastrinsios, 41, of Dixon, charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and possession of child pornography.

Police say that Kastrinsios had oral sex with a boy younger than 17 in December 2010 and that a search of his home turned up child pornography.
