Applicants sought for hands-on academy

Published: Saturday, March 23, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

Area high school students who excel in math and science have an opportunity to roll up their sleeves.

A hands-on learning experience is part of the CVM-Illinois Math & Science Initiative, which starts April 1.

The third annual CVM-Illinois Mini-Medical Academy will be June 8-9 at Trinity College of Nursing & Health Sciences. 2122 25th Ave., Rock Island. During last year’s event, students performed cataract surgery on sheep’s eyes, sutured a patch on the aorta of a heart, and saw how stents are inserted.

Activities in the college’s simulation lab also are offered.

Student entering junior or senior years in the fall, 2013 graduates, and fall sophomores with a desire to enter the health care field will be considered. Applicants who are chosen will receive a scholarship to cover any costs associated with their participation in the academy.

Visit www.trinityhealthfoundation.com to download an application. They must be submitted no later than May 15.

For more information or to request a printed copy of the application, contact Susan Wajert at wajertsc@ihs.org or call 309-779-7710.
