Senior John Thomas, 17, is Dixon High School’s February Student of the Month. His parents are Doug and Penny Thomas of Dixon, and he has a Siamese cat named Simba.

Favorite class: AP Calculus and Biology II.

Top teachers: Mrs. Mauch for AP Calculus, and Mr. Clark for Biology II. Both are very thorough in teaching and are very accessible when a student needs extra help.

Extracurriculars: I have played baseball and football 4 years, and basketball 2 years. Also, National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, Student Council, Illinois State Scholar, dodgeball, Envirothon science team for state competition, Relay for Life volunteer, job shadow at KSB Hospital, and am a member of Team Fastball USA summer travel team.

After graduation: I will be going to college to play baseball and study either physical therapy or marine biology. I am being recruited by about 20 colleges and universities to play baseball and could receive an academic scholarships of all divisions.

Paycheck: During the summers, I am constantly in the weight room, training, practicing or playing baseball, which has limited me to a part-time job for the Auto Stores of Dixon, where I drive vehicles, mow the lot, have some office and other duties.

Who is your best friend? I have been fortunate to have several close friends in sports and in the classroom; it’s more fun to be in a group.

Do you have any other favorites? Under Armour and Nike.

Biggest fear? Big spiders.

Pet peeve? People who don’t have a good work ethic.

What kind of music makes your skin crawl? Twangy country and opera.

I’m in the dictionary next to: I am “uncommon” because of my work ethic. I put 100 percent-plus in all that I do. My favorite quote by Herb Brooks is “You can’t be common, the common man goes nowhere; you have to be uncommon.”

Personal trivia: I work very hard in all that I do in being a student-athlete. I spend 3 hours of training and 2 hours a day on homework on top of a regular school day.

Dream job: To play professional baseball, It’s always been my dream.

Trading places: Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals left fielder.

Trading spaces: Maui, it’s my favorite island to surf, skimboard, paddle surf and golf. I love being in the ocean.

What would you do if you had $100,000: Buy a home in Florida so I could play baseball year round, take a trip to Maui with my family, and give some to a needy charity.

What do you wish your high school offered?: Men’s volleyball.

What’s a tip you would give freshmen for making high school life easier? Focus on academics. Do your homework and study to obtain high grades; don’t wait until your senior year.

Shout out to: My parents, for the positive motivation and support through my years in school.
