Consolidation of services not always useful

Published: Friday, March 22, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

This is in response to SVM reporter David Giuliani’s column titled “Discord? Of course, there is,” in the March 12 edition.

Your premise that consolidation of services for the county is beneficial to taxpayers cannot be compared to consolidation of services by two separate governing bodies:  Sterling and Rock Falls. The latter would be beneficial only to Sterling taxpayers.

Why would Rock Falls residents want to take on the financial burden of the Sterling Fire Department, for example? How would that be beneficial to Rock Falls taxpayers?

The city government is elected to manage the city’s services in a fiscally responsible manner. This has been accomplished in Rock Falls.
