CHICAGO (AP) – The election of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio to the papacy may not mean the Roman Catholic Church will see much change.

Susan Ross chairs Loyola University of Chicago’s theology department. She says Pope Francis is a theological conservative who is unlikely to institute any changes advocated by U.S. Catholics. The new pope is a Jesuit and Loyola is a Jesuit university.

Ross says Bergoglio’s choice of the name Francis brings to mind St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order during the Middle Ages. It was formed to deal with people living in cities. Franciscans thought the church should go to the people instead of the people coming to them.
