Illinois bishops welcome new pope
ROCKFORD (AP) – Catholic leaders across Illinois are reacting to the election of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina to the papacy.
Bishop David Malloy of Rockford said Wednesday that he welcomes the new pope with “great joy and thanksgiving.” Bergoglio took the name Pope Francis. Bergoglio says the pope has an “awesome responsibility” that affects people all over the world.
In Peoria, Bishop Daniel Jenky says the new pope will “bring a whole new set of gifts” because he is from Argentina. Jenky says he imagines “there’s a lot of dancing in the streets of Buenos Aires today.”
In Chicago, the archdiocese planned a 5:15 p.m. Mass to honor the pope at Holy Name Cathedral. Chicago’s Cardinal Francis George was in Rome participating in the conclave that elected the pope.
