CHICAGO (AP) — Roman Catholics attending a Mass of Thanksgiving at Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral say the selection of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio to the papacy signals the church recognizes it is growing South America.

Parishioner Jorge Judan says the church cannot just be limited to Europe, but has to reach out to people around the world.

Congregants who gathered to pray Wednesday said they are impressed by Francis' humble nature and style of leadership.

Monica Mavrik De Betrami told WMAQ-TV (http://bit.ly/10PcHAw) said she met the then cardinal in 2009, and "will pray for him and obey him."

At Buenos Aires Liquor and Deli on Chicago's northwest side, Argentinians popped champagne in celebration of Bergoglio's selection. Owner Ramon Giminez likened his excitement to his country's World Cup soccer wins in 1978 and 1986.
