Local trio named IBCA all-state

Erie’s Jacob Johnston, Oregon’s Caleb Mowry, and Eastland’s Dalton Shaner received all-state recognition from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association.

Johnston and Shaner were named to the Class 1A/2A second team, while Mowry was tabbed a third-teamer on the list. See the full teams on B3.


Five locals named All-NUIC West

Eastland junior Courtney Walker was chosen as a NUIC West first-teamer. Her teammate, sophomore Lexis Macomber, was a second-team selection.

Another Cougar, senior Haley Miller, was named to the third team, as were West Carroll seniors Ieshia Larson and Kaylee Vos. See the complete All-NUIC teams on B3.

All-NUIC East team includes five locals

AFC senior Sarah Matson and Polo senior Aleetra Roberts were named to the All-NUIC East second team.

Polo senior Brecken Albrecht, AFC sophomore Alisyn Essex, and Milledgeville junior Courtney Swalve were honorable-mention selections.


Five Sauk players sign with AIB

Sauk Valley Community College’s Gavin Cathie, Tyler Huffman, Matt Liberty, Bligh Williams and Justin Wolber have signed national letters of intent to continue their careers at the NAIA Division II American Instititute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa.

Huffman is a Dixon native and Amboy graduate, while Wolber is a Sterling grad. Cathie, Liberty, and Williams are Canadians. Cathie, Huffman, Liberty, and Wolber are all pitchers, while Williams is an outfielder.


Busy first day in free agency

The Baltimore Ravens signed defensive end Chris Canty, while the Miami Dolphins signed one of the Ravens’ key cogs, inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, highlighting a busy first day of free agency.

The Dolphins signed Ellberbe to a 5-year, $35 million deal, and also signed former Pittsburgh wide receiver Mike Wallace to a multi-year contract. The Steelers re-signed linebacker Larry Foote and wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

Another Ravens linebacker, Paul Kruger, signed with AFC North rival Cleveland. As for the Ravens’ acquisition, Canty, 30, spent the previous four seasons starting for the New York Giants.

Highlighting a flurry of releases was the Philadelphia Eagles cutting loose cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, just 2 years after he was the NFL’s most sought-after free agent.


Lincoln-Way East’s Allegretti picks Illinois

Lincoln-Way East junior offensive guard Nick Allegretti orally committed to play for Illinois after visiting over the weekend.

Allegretti, who is 6-foot-4, 280 pounds, helped the Griffins to a runner-up finish in Class 7A last season, and has a brother at Illinois.
