Scrap yard owner charged in theft of school buses

CHICAGO (AP) – The owner of a Chicago scrap yard has been charged in connection with the theft of eight school buses that later were found chopped in pieces at his business.

Police say 44-year-old Sergio Quintero was charged with a felony for illegally possessing a title or registration.

The buses were discovered missing from Sunrise School Bus and Charter garage on Chicago’s southeast side early Friday.

Onboard GPS systems allowed authorities to locate the buses a short time later at the West Side scrap yard.

The bus company provides buses for Chicago Public Schools, but officials say no students were affected.

Sunrise president Gregory Bonnett says it’ll cost at least $75,000 to replace each bus.
