Food, building workers on strike at U. of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN (AP) — Almost 800 food and building-service workers are on strike at the University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus.

Members of the Service Employees International Union Local 73 went on strike just after midnight Monday. They rejected a contract offer from the university. The union plans to strike for three days.

Union spokesman Adam Rosen said that when medical-care costs were included the new offer amounted to a pay cut. Rosen says no new negotiations are scheduled.

The university has said its managers and other employees will fill in for striking workers. A university spokeswoman did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

Rosen says other union workers on campus are showing support. He says garbage is not being collected on campus.
