This outdoorsman ready for March
Good night and get out, but March is actually looking like ... well, March.
Good old March, the month that transitions us from the blahs of winter to the ahhhs of spring and summer. The white stuff turns to rain – in most cases, anyway – and the first signs of spring start to appear. The rivers open and stay open, and the sun starts to strut its stuff.
March is a lot of things more than just the official beginning of spring. It’s madness, and not just the basketball kind either. It seems that hundreds of outdoor activities either start now or start very soon after.
So now is the time to get ready.
For a lot of fishermen, right now is the time to get geared up to slam whatever species it is they like to pursue. Walleye are fixin’ to go nuts in the next month or so. Crappies and gills will be moving into sun-warmed bays soon after iceout, and the catfish are already going nuts.
In most cases, whitetail bucks have shed their antlers, and enthusiasts are out searching down those sheds to see which giants have made it through the season.
Way up the list for many outdoor lovers is the upcoming spring turkey season. Turkey is a real popular bird as of late, and the number of hunters who pursue them is on the rise. Their razor-sharp vision makes them a very stiff challenge for hunters, and, at the same time, their beauty and the many available methods to hunt them with make them even that much more attractive.
All the different methods of communicating with turkeys are really cool. The clicking and chirping and gobbling are really great to hear in the morning woods. Then, seeing that big tom in full strut approaching your decoy is really neat. Being on the ground and having to wait motionless in full camo as a big bird approaches is a real exciting experience.
Enough about the birds though, man ... mushroom time is almost here! Yes sir, I love me some morels, man. Now, I know I have mentioned it before – and you can bet I’ll mention it again – but hunting morels is just plain fun. Great exercise, great scenery and great eatin’.
Do you need more info than that to wanna check out some morel huntin’? You shouldn’t, but if you do, check out morelmania.com on the web, and you can find out all you need to know out this fabulous fungus. Everything from when to hunt to where to hunt, and on and on.
So ... do you have some comfortable hiking shoes? Do you have your bow and shotgun ready to go? What about your rods and reels and boat? Oh, and don’t get so caught up in all this stuff you forget to grab yourself a 2013 hunting and fishing license. So much to do and so little time...
