Board should give teachers what they want

Published: Tuesday, March 12, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

I am dismayed by the letters and reporting (quoting only what sounds like the strike is a hardship for parents) that is so prejudicial against educators.

Salaries include what the teachers and districts pay into the pension fund. The amounts are neither free nor “incredibly lucrative.”

Teachers who pay into Social Security while working other jobs to make ends meet have their Social Security benefit reduced by at least 30 percent, and there is no spousal benefit. Teachers have to make arrangements for their retirements through negotiations.

The Dixon School Board should agree to the DEA’s requests: class sizes and materials. Teachers are Dixon’s greatest asset.
