CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has released her annual list of the top 10 consumer complaints, and complaints about student loan debt made the list for the first time.

The attorney general's office recorded more than 1,300 complaints about schools operating in Illinois. Most of the complaints were about unfair and misleading practices used by for-profit colleges, including deceptive lending practices.

The top category of consumer complaints was consumer debt. That includes complaints about mortgage lending, debt collections and credit cards.

Consumer debt was the top concern among Illinoisans for the fifth year in a row. Madigan's office says that underscores the financial challenges that persist for many of the state's residents.
