Newman, Morrison advance to sectionals

Two local Scholastic Bowl teams will compete at the sectional tournament Saturday at Keith Country Day School in Rockford, after advancing out of the regional tournament Monday.

Six local teams competed in the regional tournament at Newman Central Catholic High School in Sterling.

In round 1:

– Newman defeated Polo, 200-70.

– Oregon defeated Ashton-Franklin Center, 210-70.

– Amboy defeated Indian Creek (Shabbona), 180-120.

– Forreston defeated Somonauk; Somonauk forfeited.

In round 2:

– Newman defeated Oregon, 410-130.

– Amboy defeated Forreston, 230-180.

In round 3:

– Newman defeated Amboy, 330-140.

Six more local teams competed in the regional tournament at Morrison High School.

In round 1:

– Morrison defeated Milledgeville, 320-30.

– Eastland (Lanark) defeated Unity Christian (Fulton), 110-90.

– Pearl City defeated Fulton, 240-150.

– West Carroll (Savanna) defeated Aquin (Freeport), 150-100.

In round 2:

– Morrison defeated Eastland, 280-100.

– Pearl City defeated West Carroll, 170-90.

In round 3:

– Morrison defeated Pearl City, 170-100.

Three local teams competed, but none advanced out of the regional tournament at Auburn High School in Rockford.

In round 1:

– Auburn defeated Dixon; Dixon forfeited because of the teachers strike.

– Sterling defeated Rock Falls, 220-200.

In round 2:

– Boylan Catholic (Rockford) defeated Sterling, 260-230.

The Scholastic Bowl teams from Newman and Morrison now move to the sectional tournament Saturday in Rockford. The winners advance to the state tournament March 15 in Peoria.
