Supersectional tickets sold at Eastland H.S.
Tickets to the Eastland Cougars’ boys basketball 1A supersectional game against Newark will be sold today and Tuesday for $10 apiece at the high school.
Today, cheerleaders and players may buy tickets from 7:30-8 a.m. Tickets will be sold to other students and staff from 8 a.m. to noon, and to the general public from noon to 4 p.m.
On Tuesday, tickets will be sold to the general public from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, contact athletic department secretary Michaelle Byers Law at 815-493-6341.
Ross, Chicago State fall at Utah State
Dixon graduate Matt Ross posted eight points and five rebounds, but Chicago State fell 76-69 on the road to Utah Valley on Saturday.
Ross shot 3-for-7 and also had two assists, a steal and block, but the Cougars (8-21) lost their fourth game in a row.
Jason Johnson scored 24 points for Utah State (14-16), which also got 23 points from Ben Aird.
Russell, Redbirds roll over Bears
Rock Falls graduate Jamie Russell filled the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, as Illinois State beat Missouri State 81-60 on Sunday in Normal.
Russell shot 8-for-15, and Illinois State (20-8) won its seventh in a row after leading 47-15 at the break.
South Florida snaps skid against DePaul
Anthony Collins scored eight straight points during a game-deciding run late in the second half, and South Florida snapped a 10-game losing streak in a 83-73 win over DePaul.
Toarlyn Fitzpatrick’s 19 points led five Bulls in double digits. Collins had 16, Victor Rudd added 14, Martino Brock and Jawanza Poland had 13 apiece for South Florida (11-17, 2-14 Big East).
Cleveland Melvin and Brandon Young each scored 18 for the Blue Demons (11-18, 2-14).
Busch ends winless spell in Nationwide
Kyle Busch overcame a mid-race gaffe on pit road, leading 142 laps to win his fifth Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday.
Lewis holds off Choi, wins in Singapore
American Stacy Lewis won the HSBC Women’s Champions on Sunday for her sixth career LPGA title, overcoming two bogeys on the back nine to hold off South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi in Singapore.
Lewis shot a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish at 15-under 273, one stroke ahead of Choi.
Olympian resigns amid controversy
Three-time Olympic speedskater Andy Gabel – who last week apologized for alleged sexual misconduct with a female skater when she was 15 years old and he was in his 30s – on Sunday resigned from his positions with the sport’s regulatory bodies.
