Senior Laura Turnroth, 18, of Rock Falls, is Newman Central Catholic High School’s January Student of the Month. She is the daughter of Rick and Linda Turnroth of Rock Falls. Her brother is Jonathan Turnroth of Chicago; he and his wife, Kathy, have a daughter, Maeve, 1. Her sister Molly and her husband Chad Dolan live in Des Moines, Iowa. Laura has a cat named Stryker.

Favorite class: Anatomy. It’s really interesting to learn about the human body, and it’s geared toward what I want to go into – something in the medical profession.

Top teacher: Beth Verdick, science. She just explains everything really well. She can always come up with a story to help you remember things, even it if’s just wild. And she’s always there if you need extra help.

Extracurriculars: Volleyball and softball; Kairos leader, National Honor Society secretary and liturgical choir. I’m a religious education aide for the first-graders at St. Mary School in Sterling, too.

After graduation: I’m going to North Central College in Naperville. I’m thinking about majoring in athletic training or possibly biology.

Best friend: Jaimie Hurd, a senior at Newman. We’ve known each other since we were little. I can always be myself around her. She’d never judge me for anything. And we can make something that normally wouldn’t be fun, fun.

Favorite singer: Justin Timberlake.

Favorite actress: Jennifer Aniston.

Favorite movie: “The Proposal.”

Hobbies: Bike riding and reading.

Favorite game: The Game of Life.

Favorite food: Pasta with either wine or olive oil sauces, because I’m allergic to both the red sauce and the white sauce.

Favorite place to shop: Banana Republic.

Favorite website: Facebook or Pinterest.

Biggest fear: Things that surprise me or anything that is going to jump out at me – haunted houses, snakes in the bushes, spiders.

Pet peeve: People who are disrespectful for no reason, who just have that attitude about life.

Haunts: After football games, we like to go to McDonald’s.

I’m in the dictionary next to: Fiery. I tend to react passionately to things.

Personal trivia: I was home-schooled through eighth grade.

Dream job: Detective. I think it would be really interesting to trace crimes and find out the cause and maybe bring a resolution.

Trading places: Oprah Winfrey. She’s able to influence so many people with her talk show – plus I think it would be fun to have my own talk show – and she’s used her money to do a lot of good.

Trading spaces: The Netherlands. My sister studied abroad there, and we went to visit her. I loved it. There’s so much history there, I could never be bored.

Read this: “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. I really like that time period, and I liked the love story; it was good without being sappy.

What would you do if you had $100,000? Pay for college, put some in savings and then, just for fun, take my whole family on a nice vacation, probably somewhere warm.

What do you wish your high school offered? Home ec.

What’s a tip you would give freshmen for making high school life easier? Don’t be afraid if your friend group changes. It’s probably for the best.

Shout out: My assistant softball coach, J.D. Waldschmidt; my parents; and my boyfriend, Maison Bittner.
